FEAR

* another entry I couldn't decide which blog to put it on *

Fear can be crippling. This is something I have struggled with for a long time. That might surprise people that have known me a long time. I used to not be that way. I used to not be afraid of anything...ok well maybe a few teachers in school and rollercoasters, but I was generally a no fear kind of person until I had kids. When Anne Michal was born it was like a switch was flip and fear entered my life. I have had other moms say the same thing. I guess there is something about having the responsiblity of caring for a child that changes our perspective on many things and turn us into fearful worrywarts. I think that is natural. Most people have things they fear, but we can take it too far. I can think of times that I have been driving down the street and the fear of an accident has made me start to panic. It takes a prayer adn refocus to shake it off. Seriously, I understand how people get to the point of being afraid to leave the house. I could be there if I let myself. See...you didn't know that about me, huh? I seem so laidback and calm on the surface. ;) Anyway, I had a point in all this....Now that I have had several of my worst fears realized it really isn't any better. Sometimes it is worse. I have moments of panic and irrational fear, but the fact is that we aren't in control and for that I am thankful. I know it is by the grace of God that I don't hover over my children and can give them any space at all. If we really truly believe that God is soveriegn and in control, then what have we to fear. His plan is perfect. That is truth that we have to believe, but that doesn't make it easy.

For many of our family members and friends, their closeness to this situation has caused them to be anxious and fearful. They now know someone personally who has suffered a tragic loss and, for some, this makes it very real to them that they too are not immune from such loss themselves. Yet, worry and fear do not change anything nor do they give us control over situations. Because of this, there is a real need for us to be in prayer for one another. The Scriptures tell us that God has not given us a spirit of fear but of power and of love and of sound mind. This is where walking by faith really comes in. We don't know what is going to happen tomorrow, next month or next year. But God knows and really that should be enough for us.

Now someone please remind me of this daily. :)

Comforting Habits

I was looking at a picture of Knox last night with his fine, blonde, wispy hair. I was thinking about how we had continually put off getting his hair cut. Then I got to thinking about how when he would lay on the floor drinking his bottle he would hold the bottle with one hand and rub the hair on the top of his head with the other hand. So off I went looking for pictures of him drinking a bottle. I found one and only one and he wasn't old enough to do this yet but it is a great picture of him and my dad. I think my dad went to sleep.  ;)

A friend has a quote from him on the heading of her blog(don't you love how I get all my ideas from other people's blogs? ;) ) that says that if you don't write it down then it never happened. Funny how different situations give that quote a different conotation. It is supposed to be that we want to remember things so we write them down; we all know that especially mommies tend to forget things. For me it takes on a different meaning. I wish I could write nothing of Knox's accident, nothing of his hospital stay, nothing of his death, nothing of our grief, and nothing of the grief of our friends and family and it would all be as though it didn't happen. But the fact of the matter is that even without writing those things down and recording any memories, there are things that I am never going to forget. Some I desperately wish I could forget and others I don't want to forget.

But overall, I have to be so thankful for all the good memories that we have of Knox. All the pictures that have recorded what he looked like and the things he liked to do. We don't have to worry about not remembering what he looked like and special things he did, because we have visual reminders of those things. We have a way to write and record the memories that aren't documented by photos and we have many people who loved him and have memories of him to share with us.

A Wrinkle in Time

June 25, 2007
9:34 PM

I was reading a friend's blog the other day. She was talking about how time had seemed to stand still since her premature twins were born 8 months ago. I could so relate to this. I keep finding myself saying things like 2 months ago such and such happened or so and so did this. No that isn't true. Two months ago Knox died....four months ago those things happened. It is almost as though these 2 months have not existed. As if they didn't then, he would still be here. I don't know...doesn't make much sense but that is how it is. But in reality, time doesn't stand still; it goes on. We have to live and be, take care of our families, learn to move forward.

Robin and Knox

June 24, 2007
5:23 PM

I have had a string of friends coming to stay with me helping me with the kids keeping me moving forward. My friend Robin is here now. We met when she was a college student at Mississippi State and we were just starting out at Grace Presbyterian Church. She came up to me I think the first Sunday we were there and said, "Hi! I am Robin. I'd be happy to babysit for you anytime." Ahhh...the magic words...just kidding. She did babysit for us and we became friends. Jon married Mark and her and has now baptised two of their children. Kind of makes a person feel old. Anyway, when Knox was born she came to stay with me for a week before my mom could come and help out. Here is a picture of Knox and Robin.

Texas Weather

June 22, 2007
11:59 PM

I know you are probably wondering what this has to do with Knox but hang with me for a minute and it MIGHT make sense. When we moved to TX, I was kind of amazed by the weather. The clouds can be amazing. Big white fluffy clouds, blue skies, lots of sunshine. Then out of nowhere here comes the black clouds, ominous, threatening. Kind of takes you by surprise. Sometimes it rains, but lots of times it just looks like rain. Most of the time in the summer it is a quick 5-15 minute downpour and then it is over. 5 Minutes later you look at the sky and you never knew it had been cloudy. The other odd thing is it might pour at our house but 2 miles away doesn't get a drop.

Lately, we have been having a lot of dark cloudy days. It comes and goes. Sometimes it rains and sometimes it doesn't. But it has kind of seemed like an almost constant shadow overhead. Tonight, Jon and I were out driving around looking at houses. We could see these dark clouds in one direction. In another direction the skies were blue with white clouds. We would drive under the dark clouds for a while and then turn and we were facing the sun and blue skies. Then we would turn again and there would be the dark clouds. We could look toward the dark and see where it was raining. We could look toward the blue skies and see sunshine. It just reminded me of how so many of our days are right now. Cloudy, ominous, a shadow overhead. But yet, God still gives us moments of sunshine sometimes out of the blue. Maybe just because God has given us hope...maybe a kind word or guesture from some one...a funny thing one of the kids says...a happy memory of Knox...having others enjoy our children.

Anyway, I am not that great at analogies or communicating thought and feelings into words so I hope that gives you a glimpse of what life it like right now for us.

Wrestling

June 19, 2007
8:10 PM

I was just talking to my friend Bethany about boys and their "NEED" to wrestle. Knox loved to wrestle with Jon and Jack. If Jon was on the floor signals were automatically sent out to Knox that said "Run and jump on me." He loved to get down and roll around on the floor with the two of them. Jon liked to sneak up on them, grab them, and put them on the floor saying, "You never know when it is going to hit you!" This is the best picture I could find to stand in as a wrestling photo, but since it looks like Knox is trying to knock Jack over and is succeeding it will work!

The Rainbow

June 17, 2007
2:08 PM

We have been singing this hymn in church lately.

O Love that wilt not let me go,
I rest my weary soul in thee;
I give thee back the life I owe,
That in thine ocean depths its flow
May richer, fuller be.

O light that followest all my way,
I yield my flickering torch to thee;
My heart restores its borrowed ray,
That in thy sunshine’s blaze its day
May brighter, fairer be.

O Joy that seekest me through pain,
I cannot close my heart to thee;
I trace the rainbow through the rain,
And feel the promise is not vain,
That morn shall tearless be.

O Cross that liftest up my head,
I dare not ask to fly from thee;
I lay in dust life’s glory dead,
And from the ground there blossoms red
Life that shall endless be.

“O Love That Will Not Let Me Go” written on the evening of Matheson’s sister’s marriage. His whole family had went to the wedding and had left him alone. And he writes of something which had happened to him that caused immense mental anguish. There is a story of how years before, he had been engaged until his fiancĂ© learned that he was going blind, and there was nothing the doctors could do, and she told him that she could not go through life with a blind man. He went blind while studying for the ministry, and his sister had been the one who had taken care of him all these years, but now she is gone. He had been a brilliant student, some say that if he hadn’t went blind he could have been the leader of the church of Scotland in his day. He had written a learned work on German theology and then wrote “The Growth of The Spirit of Christianity.” Louis Benson says this was a brilliant book but with some major mistakes in it. When some critics pointed out the mistakes and charged him with being an inaccurate student he was heartbroken. One of his friends wrote, “When he saw that for the purposes of scholarship his blindness was a fatal hindrance, he withdrew from the field – not without pangs, but finally.” So he turned to the pastoral ministry, and the Lord has richly blessed him, finally bringing him to a church where he regularly preached to over 1500 people each week. But he was only able to do this because of the care of his sister and now she was married and gone. Who will care for him, a blind man? Not only that, but his sister’s marriage brought fresh reminder of his own heartbreak, over his fiancĂ©’s refusal to “go through life with a blind man.” It is the midst of this circumstance and intense sadness that the Lord gives him this hymn – written he says in 5 minutes! Looking back over his life, he once wrote that his was “an obstructed life, a circumscribed life… but a life of quenchless hopefulness, a life which has beaten persistently against the cage of circumstance, and which even at the time of abandoned work has said not “Good night” but “Good morning.” How could he maintain quenchless hopefulness in the midst of such circumstances and trials? His hymn gives us a clue. “I trace the rainbow in the rain, and feel the promise is not vain” The rainbow image is not for him “If the Lord gives you lemons make lemonade” but a picture of the Lord’s commitment! It is a picture of the battle bow that appears when the skies are darkening and threaten to open up and flood the world again in judgment. But then we see that the battle bow is turned not towards us – but toward the Lord Himself!

Cookies for Kids

June 17, 2007
11:21 AM

Yesterday was the Cookie for Kids contest that our kids had entered to help raise money for the pediatric patients at St. Josephs and Scott and White in Temple. They raised $865 total and were absolutely thrilled. Thank you everyone who donated money!! Jack and Anne Michal were both to enter a cookie eating contest but Jack chickened out so Emma was going to stand in for him but she chickened out too. So Anne Michal was the only one in the family to compete. Here are some pics from the contest. On my other blog the whole long story will be posted with a multitude of pictures from the day. Consider these a teaser.

Anticipating eating as many cookies as she can in 12 minutes.  Yikes!!

Hard at work.  She had a cup of water to help her out.

Trying to figure out how eating cookies can be such hard work.

A couple of friends and winners!!!

Right at the end it started raining and we were treated with a rainbow and reminder of hope as we drove away.

Sonic

I got the kids sonic today for lunch. I had sonic for lunch the day I had Knox. Had I known I was going to have him that day I would NOT have had Sonic that day. I do NOT recommend having sonic the day you have a baby. I always wondered what that little curved bowl was for....thankfully I didn't actually need but only felt like I did. ;)

Hannah's memory

June 12, 2007
4:45 PM

Hannah was babysitting today and the kids were watching a movie. She was remembering how Knox loved to turn the TV off when they were watching movies. They used to get so aggravated about it because on our TV it makes the DVD go back to the beginning and they would have to find their spot. Knox thought it was hilarious!

One of the Greatest Gifts

June 11, 2007

you can give your kids is a sibling. We have always felt this way and our kids agree. They love each other and have a tight bond. The older ones have to "sacrifice" things for the little ones but it isn't really a sacrifice because look what they get in return...something that can't be taken away. Knox is gone but their love for him is not and they know they will see him again. Not long before Knox's accident, Anne Michal had been lobbying for a new sibling. She offered to sleep on the couch if there wasn't room or we needed another bed. I thought that was really sweet and an example of her love for her siblings.

The funeral service

June 9, 2007
12:57 PM

Knox's funeral service was recorded. I debated a long time about whether or not to put the link on here or not, but I have to tell you that it was more than a funeral. As someone said to me, "There is a lot of truth in it that we all need to hear" which why even though I didn't think I would ever listen to it, I have and I am sure I will listen to it again. Part of it did get left out. We sang "Beneath the Blood-Stained Lintel" to the tune of "O Sacred Head Now Wounded" and "Jesus Lover of my Soul" and in between those songs there were some New Testament Readings. All that took place right before Jon spoke.

http://www.wpc-bryan.org/joomla/ and the link is on the right side where you see Knox's picture.

Hope it blesses someone.

BENEATH THE BLOOD STAINED LINTEL

Beneath the blood-stained lintel I with my children stand.
A messenger of evil Is passing through the land.
There is no other refuge from the destroyer's face.
Beneath the blood-stained lintel shall be our hiding place.

The Lamb of God has suffered our sins and griefs He bore,
By faith the blood is sprinkled above our dwelling's door.
The foe who seeks to enter doth fear that sacred sign,
Tonight the blood-stained lintel shall shelter me and mine.

My Savior, for my dear ones I claim Thy promise true.
The Lamb is "for the household" - the children's Savior too.
On earth the little children once felt Thy touch divine;
Beneath the blood-stained lintel Thy blessing give to mine.

O thou who gave them, guard them, those wayward little feet,
The wilderness before them, the ills of life to meet.
My mother love is helpless, I trust them to Thy care!
Beneath the blood-stained lintel, oh, keep me ever there!

The faith I rest upon Thee Thou will not disappoint;
With wisdom, Lord, to train them, my shrinking heart anoint.
Without my children, Father, I cannot see Thy face;
I plead the blood-stained lintel, Thy covenant of grace.

Oh, wonderful Redeemer, Who suffered for our sake,
When o'er the guilty nations the judgment storm shall break,
With joy from that safe shelter may we then meet Thine eye,
Beneath the blood-stained lintel, my children, Lord, an I.

Jesus Lover of My Soul
  1. Jesus, lover of my soul,
    Let me to Thy bosom fly,
    While the nearer waters roll,
    While the tempest still is high.
    Hide me, O my Savior, hide,
    Till the storm of life is past;
    Safe into the haven guide;
    Oh, receive my soul at last.
  2. Other refuge have I none,
    Hangs my helpless soul on Thee;
    Leave, ah! leave me not alone,
    Still support and comfort me.
    All my trust on Thee is stayed,
    All my help from Thee I bring;
    Cover my defenseless head
    With the shadow of Thy wing.
  3. Wilt Thou not regard my call?
    Wilt Thou not accept my prayer?
    Lo! I sink, I faint, I fall—
    Lo! on Thee I cast my care.
    Reach me out Thy gracious hand!
    While I of Thy strength receive,
    Hoping against hope I stand,
    Dying, and behold, I live.
  4. Thou, O Christ, art all I want,
    More than all in Thee I find;
    Raise the fallen, cheer the faint,
    Heal the sick, and lead the blind.
    Just and holy is Thy Name,
    Source of all true righteousness;
    Thou art evermore the same,
    Thou art full of truth and grace.
  5. Plenteous grace with Thee is found,
    Grace to cover all my sin;
    Let the healing streams abound;
    Make and keep me pure within.
    Thou of life the fountain art,
    Freely let me take of Thee;
    Spring Thou up within my heart;
    Rise to all eternity.
  6.

Knox's crocs

June 5, 2007
10:13 PM

or TWOfor ONE. When I was looking for pictures of Knox in his crocs I found these pictures of him playing outside. He was doing something that he really liked to do and that was making a loop around our yard. He would go down the drive adn across to the front steps, climb the steps and go up the front walk, and then back around to the drive. It was like he was on a mission.

Here is a picture of him at the bottom of the drive making the turn.

This one is blurry so he must have being going fast as he neared the steps!  ;)

And heading back toward the drive.  Does he look like he is on a mission or what?
